An 1860s mining town turned Victorian ski town with the largest historic district in Colorado.

Majestic peaks surround the town.

Shop along the historic main street, play golf, stroll along the riverwalk, bike, or fish.   The Blue River runs through the town and is a great place to fish for trout and within easy access of other things the town offers to do.

In the winter, take the gondola or the Express SuperChair, the highest chairlift in North America, to the top of 4 peaks to enjoy a day of skiing.

From Breckenridge, continue on Hwy 9 past beautiful Lake Dillon, a great place for sailing.  Nine miles from Breckenridge turn onto Interstate 70 West bound and travel 7 miles to the turn off to Copper Mountain Ski Area or CO Hwy 91.  A 24 mile drive past Clinton Gulch Reservoir and over Fremont Pass will take you to the historic mining town of Leadville.

In the 1890s this 10,152 foot high city was the second largest in Colorado with 30,000 residents many fortune hunters trying to make their fortune in silver mining.   In 1860 gold was discovered nearby but was soon exhausted.  Seventeen years later heavy sand discarded by the previous miners was found to contain silver.

Leadville has a 70 block National Historic District.  Take a walking tour of the Victorian buildings, visit the antique shops, the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum - largest in the country, tour the 1870s Healy House and Dexter Cabin, the Tabor Home, or visit the Tabor Opera House.

See the surrounding scenery by the newly renovated Leadville Colorado and Sourthern train.  If you prefer hiking, climb Mount Elbert, the tallest mountain in Colorado or hike to a section of the Colorado Trail.

From Leadville travel south on Hwy 24 through Buena Vista, then continue south on Hwy 285 about 15 miles.  Cut off on Hwy 291 southeast and drive 9 miles to Salida.

Salida, Colorado

An 1880s town which grew up around the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and originally called South Arkansas, Salida was a division point on the way to Leadville and a trade center for nearby mining areas.

Salida's Downtown is one of the largest historic districts in Colorado filled with cafes and art galleries.  The Arkansas River,the most boated river in the nation, runs through the east end of the downtown area.   Stop in River Park to watch the slalom course.

Salida is a great base for hiking the tallest peaks in Colorado.  Fifteen of the 57 Colorado 14ers (over 14,000 ft) are nearby.

You can also relax in the largest indoor hot springs pool in Colorado, mountain bike many trails in the upper Arkansas Valley, engage in the many river sports on the Arkansas, or enjoy a day of fishing or golfing.   In winter Monarch Ski Area is only 25 miles away.

Continue east from Salida to Texas Creek about 30 miles to Hwy 69.  Take 69 south another 25 miles to Westcliffe.
